Oral Pathology
Oral pathology involves the assessment and management of abnormalities affecting the mouth, oral soft tissues, jaws and associated structures. Oral lesions can have many different causes, and a persistent or unusual change may require specialist assessment to establish an appropriate diagnosis.
Conditions that may require assessment include persistent ulcers, lumps, swellings, cysts, changes in the oral mucosa and other lesions of the mouth or jaw. Depending on the clinical findings, further investigation, imaging or surgical sampling may be recommended.
Where surgical treatment is required, the appropriate procedure will depend on the type, size and location of the lesion and the underlying diagnosis. Any tissue removed during surgery may be submitted for pathological examination where appropriate.
